The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club has a rich heritage, tracing its roots to Hong Kong’s earliest colonial history. The RHKYC has played a key role in the development of sports in the region and is a leader amongst sailing clubs globally.
In 2023, History Ink was engaged by the Club to create a professional archive by appraising, cataloguing and preserving important historical records that reflect not just the Club's history, but the wider sweep of Hong Kong's social past.
Archives creation
Working closely with RHKYC senior staff, History Ink’s consultant archivist appraised and catalogued a diverse collection spanning photographs, trophies, publications and artefacts.
Every item was arranged and described according to archival principles and best practice, creating for a searchable record of the Club's remarkable past.
Understanding software solutions
We advised the Club on suitable Archive Management Systems to host and manage the collection digitally, evaluating options suited to the scale and nature of the RHKYC's holdings.
Alongside this, the team developed a full suite of tailored archival policies covering collection development, data protection and digital preservation, and delivered bespoke training sessions for RHKYC staff, ensuring the knowledge and skills to maintain the archive remain within the Club for the long term.
