A bank with a story to tell
Digging through the archives
History Ink was engaged by Santander UK in 2021, three years before the bank's milestone 175th anniversary in 2024. The task was both ambitious and wide-ranging: to research, discover, organise and then communicate the extraordinary story of one of Britain's major financial institutions - and the predecessors that made it.
Santander UK's history is, in fact, the history of the democratisation of home ownership. Its predecessor companies - Abbey National, the Alliance & Leicester Building Society, Bradford & Bingley - were themselves pioneers of financial inclusion, helping ordinary people purchase their own homes.
History Ink's archival research encompassed collections in both the UK and Spain (home to Banco Santander’s own archive collection), uncovering early advertisements, account ledgers, minute books, staff newsletters and wonderful ephemera from across the predecessor companies dating back to the early 1800s.
Among the most delightful discoveries: 221B Baker Street - the fictional home of Sherlock Holmes - was actually located inside Abbey National's headquarters. And Abbey employed a member of staff to reply to Sherlock fan letters addressed to the detective that arrived every week!
Digital Archive Wall at new head office
The centrepiece of the 175th anniversary was a Digital Archive Wall, created in partnership with our digital exhibition partner Airavata Productions. Installed at Santander UK's new headquarters at Unity Place in Milton Keynes, the interactive exhibit allows visitors to examine digitised historic documents, listen to audio recordings, and browse old photographs and pamphlets - all drawn from the archival research History Ink had conducted over three years.
The exhibit runs as both a physical installation in the head office atrium and as an online intranet version accessible to Santander colleagues worldwide - making the bank's own history a tangible part of its daily culture.
Taking the story to the world’s most visited museum
As a further highlight of the anniversary year, History Ink curated a special exhibition - The Santander UK Story - which was unveiled at the British Museum as part of Santander's annual celebration of education and entrepreneurship. The exhibition explored how financial inclusion and education have been at the heart of the business for 175 years, from the penny-savings movement of the Victorian era to today's digital banking.
Design and production was delivered in partnership with Sugar HK and Tecna, ensuring the exhibition met the exacting standards required for display in one of the world's great cultural institutions.
